I agree with Playmobil31 regarding the ''French Speaking' in TO.

You can find some ''French'' stuff like on-line services or forms with the government, providers or banks (because this is a provincial requirement to offer information in both languages) however the reality is another story. You may find a few people with some French knowledges at the Federal or Provincial levels (I am not speaking about the francophones) but that's all. Ask a coffee at Tim Horton or ask a question concerning a product at Future Shop or Wal-Mart in French and people could say: ''Sorry, I don't speak German''

I saw a few years ago on TV, a reporter from Global TV who was walking in the Chinese community in Richmond Hill or Markham and when she asked the question about the ''other'' official language in Canada except English, they were unable to say French was the other official language  :-\ !!!! This is poor but this is the reality.

Of course, I found some people (English or not) trying to speak or learn French with me and very happy to learn one or two words :). Why? Because most of the time, they learned French a few years ago or a long time ago in the French immersion classroom at school.

Anyway, English is the ''universal'' language but tomorrow????

Except in the French bakery in front of my appartments. When I enter inside, the girl at the front desk welcome me with:" Bonjour, comment ca va ?".
That's rock, isn't it ;)

But sometimes we can face someone who answers you in french. Whereas the question was told in english... then I feel like sh**t, and make me understand I still have to improve my english
But :biere: makes things easier

I agree with you guys,

I am just wondering what is our duty in order to be served in French. It's true that most of people (Francophones) who decided to move in Toronto or any english areas in canada, have no problem with speaking english, But what will happen if you would like to be served in French in a Gouvernemental service and the person in front of you just throw on your face : "sorry I don't speak french!! "  :o

Well I feel proud to speak the 2 officials languages (plus one), no worry at all.. but still couldn't accept that some people (some french speakers) just don't care when they are served in english after asking persons in french .

Radio-canada recently did the test :they went to kingston + calgary + vancouver + halifax... in Poste office, Canada border service agency etc..... (places where you supposed to be served in french)... the results ????

I will let you guessing ;)
